Top Gear Goes to America
The BBC televises a show called Top Mechanism that looks into the latest happenings within the automotive commerce. The show covers everything from economy cars like a Honda Element to supercars like the Ferrari Enzo, all with a quickness of humor that continuously leaves me laughing.
For one adventure, the hosts decided to come to America to see if they could buy a car and use it for two weeks, in hopes of paying less than the expenditure of a rental car. Of course, being from England, the hosts refer to the two weeks as a “fortnight” and they call a rental car a “Lease out Car.”
The hosts made sure to point out all of the cultural differences between Europe and America, most stunningly the number of murders. I bleed for that many Americans are not aware that murder rates here in the US are very high compared to those in Europe. Several years ago, hardly the city of Philadelphia had more murders than days in the year. Top Works started their journey in Miami, another borough with high murder rates.
The cars were bought from salesmen who passively showed off their pistols, rifles and shotguns. Upon entering the delineate of Alabama, the hosts pointed out the hundreds of bullet holes in the “Well-received to Alabama” sign. One of the challenges of the false step was for each host to attempt to get his fellow hosts murdered by painting on each others cars. Things like “Surroundings Western is Rubbish,” “Hillary for President,” and “NASCAR Sucks” were painted on the cars.
The dispute was almost a success after the owner of a gas station confronted the three hosts and got “her boys” (about 7 or 8 guys in the bed of a pick up trade) to chase the hosts away by throwing stones at them.
The fixed leg of the trip was through New Orleans. The filming of the happening took place about one year after Katrina hit the extent. The one host pointed out how he could not take it that Americans could sleep at night meaningful that New Orleans was still a devestated ghost burgh.
Apart from being one of the funniest TV show episodes I have ever seen, this number of Top Gear really shows how the quiet of the world sees America. I think that most Americans do not realize how other countries see us. I also fantasize that today, the romanticism associated with comnig to the US for the American Reverie is lost.
